Gaining Good Judgement Skills

Good Judgment skills include:

1. Respect. The ability to give respect and gain respect is important. Through respecting others, ourselves, and things, we are demonstrating a broader awareness and openness. This does not mean you agree or always understand, though that is a goal. It does mean that you are aware that there are more options and opportunities than are seen at first glance, and that you can appreciate this and take a more long-term view of things.

2. Being able to take the long view of things, as well as a willingness to endure discomfort and fear when pursuing the long-term views. An example of this is thinking about switching jobs, but you are afraid that if you leave your current job, you will regret it. Since there is no guarantee that the next job would be any better you do nothing.

With good skills, you seek additional knowledge about how to switch jobs by talking to others who have done it. You look at the long-term view which could be that without switching jobs you miss out on other opportunities. You are able to work through your fear because you can see the long-view.

3. Knowing when to get help, seek out more knowledgeable people, and find resources to gain more insight and tools to help you deal with the obstacles.

4. Being able to maintain an objective point-of-view and be realistic about things and understanding the limits.

5. Being able to look at things without “I”. It means being objective and being able to remove your ego and the prejudices you have.

6. Being able to see clearly, having clarity, focus, lack of confusion, and the ability to commit to something after thoughtful deliberation.

7. Knowing yourself well enough so that you know your limitations and your ability to know what to do next.

8. Being able to balance the risks/cons and the benefits/pros before making a decision.

9. Knowing you are always willing to learn new things, to look at things from different points-of-view, and to listen to feedback, criticisms, and others perspectives.

10. Being flexible, and be willing and able to change what you do and how you view things.

Gaining Good Judgment skills is a continuing process and the more you develop them the better you will be at making judgments, problem solving, and growing as a person into a happier life.
